However, not all people will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a traumatic event. Although someone might not develop PTSD, they may develop PTSD-like symptoms immediately after a traumatic event. Many of these symptoms are actually common reactions to a traumatic event. What Are Normal Symptoms? So, what is a normal symptom and what is an abnormal symptom? This is difficult to answer as everyones response to a traumatic event  is different. However, there are some common symptoms that may be expected to occur after a traumatic event. Common reactions to a traumatic event are described below. Intrusive thoughts and memories. After a traumatic event, it is common to experience some intrusive thoughts and memories of the traumatic event. This is especially likely to occur when you encounter something (for example, a person, place or image) that reminds you of the traumatic event.Hypervigilance. It is also very natural to feel more on-guard and aware of your surroundings after a traumatic event. This is actually a very protective symptom following a traumatic event. Your body is attempting to keep you safe by making you more aware of potential sources of threat and danger. This natural safety mechanism is going to be more sensitive after a traumatic event is experienced.Hyperarousal. Just as you are going to likely be more on-guard, you are also likely going to feel more keyed-up and on edge following a traumatic event. This is again part of your bodys natural protection system. Fear and anxiety tell us that there is some kind of danger present, and all the bodily sensations that go along with fear and anxiety are essentially designed to help us respond to that danger. They are preparing us to flee, freeze or to fight. Following a traumatic event, your bodys alarm system is going to be more sensitive in an attempt to protect you from future traumatic events.Feeling Unsafe. After a traumatic event, our assumptions about the world being a safe and secure place are understandably shattered. Consequently, people may feel as though any situation or place is potentially dangerous. Places or situations you once felt secure in may now feel threatening and be anxiety-provoking. This is especially likely to occur in situations or places that remind you of your traumatic event. As you read through some symptoms that commonly occur following a traumatic event, you will notice that most are symptoms of PTSD. It is important to remember that just because you have these symptoms does not mean you have PTSD.First, although the symptoms below can be distressing, they are often much less severe and intense than the symptoms found in PTSD.In addition, PTSD cannot be diagnosed until at least 30 days following a traumatic event. This is because many PTSD-like symptoms are actually part of your bodys natural response to a traumatic event, and for many people, these symptoms will gradually reduce over time. Symptoms to Keep an Eye out For The symptoms presented below can be a sign that you may be at risk for developing PTSD. They may cause the symptoms listed above to become worse, eventually leading to PTSD. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of the following symptoms. Loss of interest. It is important to keep an eye out for a loss of interest in activities that you used to once enjoy, as well as feelings of being detached from others. This symptom can be a sign that you are ?at  risk of becoming depressed. This symptom may also cause you to isolate yourself from others, including important sources of social support.Avoidance. After a traumatic event, it is very common to avoid certain situations, activities or people. However, you must pay attention to avoidance behaviors. Avoidance usually leads to more avoidance as it reinforces our belief that the world is not a safe place after a traumatic event. This avoidance can then lead to a worsening of symptoms and eventually PTSD.Unhealthy coping behaviors. Just as avoidance of activities, situations or people can be problematic, so can the avoidance of thoughts and feelings. The symptoms people experience after a traumatic event can be very distressing. As a result, people may rely on unhealthy coping strategies (for example, using substances) as a way of avoiding these symptoms. Avoidance is only a short-term solution, and in the long-run, it can actually cause your feelings and thoughts to become more intense. What You Can Do Following a Traumatic Event After a traumatic event, it is very important to put into place healthy coping strategies, such as using social support, and minimizing unhealthy coping strategies, such as avoidance through alcohol or drugs. Validate your feelings. You dont have to force yourself to talk to others about how you feel; however, it is important you dont try to push away your feelings. It may also be helpful to establish a regular routine or schedule. Traumatic events can greatly disrupt a persons life. They may make a person feel that their life is out-of-control and unpredictable. A regular set schedule can help bring some order and predictability to your life. Although this wont take away anxiety related to a traumatic event, it may help with other sources of anxiety in your life. In setting a schedule, it is important that you put aside time focused on self-care activities. Dont use your schedule as a way to simply keep busy (for example, throwing yourself into your work) so you dont have time to think about the traumatic event. Finally, it may be helpful to talk with a therapist. There are several websites that provide free searches to help you find appropriate mental health providers in your area. A therapist can provide support, as well as help you better understand the symptoms you are experiencing.

So, the job at Thornfield was presented to her and her future was set. She first meets Mrs. Fairfax, the kind housekeeper at Thornfield manor. Jane is excited about her new job and feels comforted by the housekeepers kindness and her students cheerfulness. Although she feels uneasy about the prospect of meeting her master. On the way to deliver a letter she runs across a man who was thrown from his horse and needs to be helped. Seeing his distress she offered to help. It was very awkward when she helped him back onto his horse probably because of his kurt demeanor and unappreciative expression all the while being concerned with her wellbeing since she was traveling alone. She describes him as dark and foreboding but she felt no fear. She helps him on his way and she continues on hers. When she got back to Thornfield she was surprised to find her master had returned and sprained his ankle. What a coincidence. The next day she was called into Mr. Rochesters study along with her pupil Adele. She knew her traveler immediately by his grim face and demeanor and sat in the chair opposite him. He began the conversation about presents and a lot of banter continued. Their conversation was loaded in irony and double meaning (as Mr. Rochester compared her lengthily to a fairy) and were met with confusion by Ms. Fairfax. She flirts very hard but Rochester goes between disinterest and flirting back regularly, maybe to make Jane jealous? Jane often is je alous of her beauty but finds her hauty, fake and only interested in him for his money. While everyone is there a strange gypsy comes to the door and offers to read the people. When Jane goes the gypsy asks very pointed questions about her feelings only for the reader to find out later that it was Mr. Rochester the whole time determined to figure out if she loved him. That night Mason is stabbed by the mysterious person (who Jane thinks is Grace Poole) which opens a lot of questions for Jane. When she arrives she gets to see Bessie, the maid who showed her kindness as a child. They chit chat before Jane goes in to see Ms. Reed but it seems the sickness has gone to her head and nothing she says makes sense, but a lot is reve aled on why she hated Jane and why she was in her care in the first place. When Ms. Reed dies she heads home. She assumes Rochester will marry soon and struggles with the idea of leaving him, but knows it is what is best. She now is honest with herself and declares that she does in fact love him. While taking a walk one beautiful evening she runs across him but hopes to avoid him. He does not let her walk away unnoticed and pulls her in for a talk. He informs her of his plans to be married. Little does she know the bride is meant to be her. Through a lot of unnecessary tears and yelling they both confess their feelings and decide to marry. Alls bliss for a short while but on her wedding day she gets quite a shock. Mason shows up and confesses that hes the brother of ROCHESTERS WIFE! Thats right, hes married to THE CRAZY WOMAN IN THE ATTIC. Turns out he married her when they were young (not for love) and she went slowly insane so he shut her up in the attic. Jane, obviously shocked leaves Rochester and runs away to the country. During her stay with these 3 siblings and their servant, Jane wrestles with her feelings and mourns her Rochester. She becomes friends with the sisters and tries to move on from her life at thornfield. She gets a job teaching and is slow to enjoy it but ends up connecting with her students all the while plagued with regrets of leaving Rochester. St. John randomly reveals that they are in fa ct cousins and their shared wealthy uncle died. Her cousin also tells her of their newfound money and his wish to go to india with her and marry Jane. But she doesnt love him. And theyre COUSINS so ew. Soon after Jane thinks she hears Rochester calling for her in the night and she cant deny her feelings any more. The Other Reichs Before Hitler's Third The German word reich means empire, although it can also be translated as government. In 1930s Germany, the Nazi party identified their rule as a Third Reich and, in doing so, gave English speakers around the world a wholly negative connotation to the word. Some people are surprised to find that the concept, and use, of three reichs is not a solely Nazi idea, but a common component of German historiography. This misconception stems from the use of Reich as a totalitarian nightmare, and not as an empire.  As you can tell, there were two reichs before Hitler made his third, but you might see reference to a fourth. The First Reich: The Holy Roman Empire (800/962 - 1806) Although the name dates to the twelfth-century reign of Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Empire had its origins over 300 years earlier. In 800 AD, Charlemagne was crowned emperor of a territory which covered much of western and central Europe; this created an institution that would remain, in one form or another, for over a thousand years. The Empire was reinvigorated by Otto I in the tenth century, and his imperial coronation in 962 has also been used to define the start of both the Holy Roman Empire and the First Reich. By this stage, Charlemagnes empire had been divided, and the remainder was based around a set of core territories occupying much the same area as modern Germany. The geography, politics, and strength of this empire continued to fluctuate massively over the next eight hundred years but the imperial ideal, and the German heartland, remained. In 1806, the Empire was abolished by the then Emperor Francis II, partly as a response to the Napoleonic threat. Allowing for the difficulties in summarizing the Holy Roman Empire - which parts of a fluid thousand-year history do you select? - it was generally a loose confederation of many smaller, almost independent, territories, with little desire to vastly expand across Europe. It wasnt considered the first at this point, but a follow-up to the Roman Empire of the classical world; indeed Charlemagne was meant to be a new Roman leader. The Second Reich: The German Empire (1871 - 1918) The dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, combined with a growing feeling of German nationalism, led to repeated attempts at unifying the multitude of German territories before a single state was created almost solely by the will of Otto von Bismarck, aided by the military skills of Moltke. Between 1862 and 1871, this great Prussian politician used a combination of persuasion, strategy, skill, and outright warfare to create a German Empire dominated by Prussia, and ruled by the Kaiser (who had very little to do with the creation of the empire he would rule). This new state, the Kaiserreich, grew to dominate European politics at the close of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. In 1918, after defeat in the Great War, a popular revolution forced the Kaiser into abdication and exile; a republic was then declared. This second German Empire was largely the opposite of the Holy Roman, despite having the Kaiser as a similar imperial figurehead: a centralized and authoritarian state whi ch, after the dismissal of Bismarck in 1890, maintained an aggressive foreign policy. Bismarck was one of the geniuses of European history, in no small part because he knew when to stop. The Second Reich fell when it was ruled by people who didnt. The Third Reich: Nazi Germany (1933 - 1945) In 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of the German State, which, at that point, had been a democracy. Dictatorial powers and sweeping changes soon followed, as democracy disappeared and the country militarized. The Third Reich was to have been a vastly extended German Empire, expunged of minorities and lasting for a thousand years, but it was removed in 1945 by a combined force of allied nations, which included Britain, France, Russia, and the US. The Nazi state proved to be dictatorial and expansionist, with goals of ethnic purity that formed a stark contrast to the first reichs broad assortment of peoples and places. A Complication When using the standard definition of the term, The Holy Roman, Kaiserreich, and Nazi states were certainly reichs, and you can see how they might have been tied together in the minds of 1930s Germans: from Charlemagne to the Kaiser to Hitler. The history of modern Germany is often summarized as being three reichs and three democracies. This is broadly correct, as modern Germany did indeed evolve out of a series of three empires - as described above - interspersed with forms of democracy; however, this does not automatically make the institutions German. While The First Reich is a useful name for historians and students, applying it to the Holy Roman Empire is largely anachronistic. The imperial title and office of the Holy Roman Emperor drew, originally and in part, on the traditions of the Roman Empire, considering itself as an inheritor, not as the first. Indeed, it is highly debatable at what point, if ever, the Holy Roman Empire became a German body. Despite a near continuous core of land in northern central Europe, with a growing national identity, the reich extended into many of the modern surrounding territories, contained a mix of peoples, and was dominated for centuries by a dynasty of emperors commonly associated with Austria. To consider the Holy Roman Empire as solely German, rather than an institution within which there was a considerable German element, might be to lose some of this reichs character, nature, and importance. Conversely, the Kaiserreich was a German state - with an evolving German identity - that partly defined itself in relation to the Holy Roman Empire. The Nazi Reich was also built around one particular concept of being German; indeed, this latter reich certainly considered itself a descendant of the Holy Roman and German Empires, taking the title third, to follow them. Three Different Reichs The summaries given above may be very brief, but they are enough to show how these three empires were very different types of state; the temptation for historians has been to try and find some sort of linked progression from one to another. Comparisons between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kaiserreich began before this latter state was even formed. Historians and politicians of the mid 19th century theorized an ideal state, the Machtstaat, a centralized, authoritarian and militarized power state (Wilson, The Holy Roman Empire, Macmillan, 1999). This was, in part, a reaction to what they considered weaknesses in the old, fragmented, empire. The Prussian-led unification was welcomed by some as the creation of this Machtstaat, a strong German empire which focused around a new emperor, the Kaiser. However, some historians began to project this unification back into both the 18th century and the Holy Roman Empire, finding a long history of Prussian intervention when Germans were threatene d. Different again were the actions of some scholars in the aftermath of the Second World War, when attempts to understand how the conflict occurred led to the three reichs being seen as an inevitable progression through increasingly authoritarian and militarized governments. Modern Use An understanding of the nature  and relationship of these three reichs is necessary for more than historical study. Despite a claim in the ​Chambers Dictionary of World History that The term [Reich] is no longer used (Dictionary of World History, ed.
