NASDA THEATRE STUDIES YEAR TWO FIRST ASSIGNMENT: ESSAY Gin and guns—either one is bad enough, but together they get you in a dickens of a mess, don t they.—Accused murderer Belva Gaertner, 1924 (National Geographic, N.D) Sequins, glamour, sex and murder sounds like the stuff movies are made of but the award winning, longest running American musical Chicago is based on the true murder cases of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan who were accused of killing their partners under the influence of alcohol and Jazz music in 1924. Maurine Watkins made Chicago what it is today. Maurine was a former reporter who followed the murder trials of Gaertner and Annan; her inquisitive mindset into the way the women were prosecuted sparked her to write the play Chicago in 1926. From then on the show has gone to Broadway in 1974 and revived in 1996. In 2002 it was then turned into a movie casting major stars such as Catherine Zita Jones. Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a wannabe celebrity who is arrested for murdering her lover whilst trying to convince her soft, pushover of a husband, Amos, to lie for her. Roxie is sent to the Cook County Jail where she meets her idol, a performer and double murderess Velma Kelly. Billy Flynn , a greedy sex-driven lawyer is to represent both of the murderesses, but the stakes rise rapidly as the two women fight for the spotlight of newspaper headlines.
